Our cameras open up on a pair of hands holding a plastic mask. As the camera pans back, it reveals a gold face with a black star across the middle of it. The camera pulls back further to reveal the man holding the mask is the man who used to paint his face in a similar fashion. Cody Rhodes, the son of a son of a plumber, looked up to the camera and smirked as he held the mask up next to his face.
Cody Rhodes: Two faces, huh? This business is full of people with two faces. I should know - I spent my whole career dealing with people who had them. I didn’t really have much a choice but to. Wrestling is in my blood, you know? It’s the family business. My brother is a wrestler… my dad was one of the best wrestlers in the world. They worked everywhere, you know? The NWA, WCW, WWE… everywhere. Everyone respected them, but the McMahons didn’t really get them. See Vince didn’t understand that people can fall in love with a professional wrestler just because he had a big heart and a never-say-die attitude. No, they thought my dad and my brother needed a hook, a character other than the American Dream and the Natural. So, my dad got put in polka dots and my brother got painted gold.
Cody smirked and looked back down at the mask that beared his resemblance. They used to sell these to fans who liked the character his bosses wanted him to keep playing.
Cody Rhodes: Now don’t get me wrong, they loved it. My brother loved being Goldust and my dad never laughed harder than when he was dancing with Sapphire… we had her over for Thanksgiving a few times. She used to pinch my cheeks and called me Cowboy. Anyway, what I’m saying is that we Rhodes were always willing to tow the company line. We were just happy to play our part. I didn’t mind being Stardust… hell, I loved it at first. My problem is… after a while… people didn’t see Cody Rhodes anymore. They just saw the wacky science fiction alien from the 5th dimension.
Cody tossed the mask away and stood up from the folding chair. Wearing a tan tailored suit that fit him snug in the right places, Cody looked a lot more like one of Flair’s kids than the American Dream. There were no signs of Stardust in the main in front of the camera.
Cody Rhodes: You ever work a job that’s just… comfortable. You know what I mean? Like, the pay is good, the workload is manageable, and it’s relatively stress-free but you just aren’t feeling fulfilled? I quit the WWE because they wanted me to be something that wasn’t me anymore. I quit the WWE because I wanted to be Cody Rhodes. I quit the WWE because I wanted to keep a promise I made to the American Dream that he didn’t get to see me carry out. I quit the WWE because I promised my dad that he’d see our name on a World Championship title belt again.
The emotion was clear as day on Cody’s face. It always was when he talked about the Dream. He couldn’t help it. The American Dream meant a lot to the fans, to the wrestling business, but he meant everything to Cody.
Cody Rhodes: When my dad was feeling unfulfilled in this business, he quit his job and joined a little promotion called ECW to rediscover his passion. So when I got the word that Paul Heyman reopened the doors to the ECW Arena, I knew that he needed a Rhodes to help him keep it open. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to reintroduce myself… I’m the Son of a Son of a Plumber… the Star That Left Them All in the Dust… Cody Rhodes… and I’m here in ECW to keep my promises.
